Who Needs Utah Alcohol Training?

Every individual in the state of Utah who sells or serves alcoholic beverages for on- or off-site consumption must complete alcohol server training.

On-premise training is designed for servers at bars, restaurants and similar establishments. Employees who sell sealed beer to go at businesses such as grocery and convenience stores need to complete off-premise training — also known as Eliminate Alcohol Sales to Youth (E.A.S.Y.) training.

On-premise alcohol training must be completed within 30 days of starting employment, and off-premise employees must finish the course before they start selling alcohol. For both programs, retraining is required every three years.

Fast, easy. I had to get a certificate to start my job ASAP, and I couldn't have found a more sufficient website. Thanks!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between on-premise and off-premise alcohol training?

On-premise alcohol server training is mandatory for employees who serve alcohol for on-premise consumption. Workers who need this type of training include bartenders, servers and other employees at businesses where alcohol is consumed on-site. Examples of on-premise establishments are bars, nightclubs, restaurants and other locations where alcohol can be legally consumed by customers.

Off-premise alcohol training is mandatory for employees who sell sealed beer for off-premise consumption. Examples of off-premise establishments include grocery stores, convenience stores and other locations where customers cannot consume alcohol on-site.

Who is required to have an alcohol certification?

Utah law states that there must be a valid record that an individual completed an alcohol training and education seminar.

This includes individuals who:

  • Serve an alcoholic product to a customer for consumption on the premises of a licensee
  • Sell beer to a customer for consumption off the premises of an off-premise beer retailer
  • Manage operations at the premises of a licensee engaged in the retail sale of an alcoholic product for consumption on the premises
  • Supervise the serving of an alcoholic product to a customer for consumption on the premises of a licensee
  • Directly supervises the sale of beer to a customer for consumption off the premises of an off-premise beer retailer

While managers and supervisors are required to have an alcohol certification, our programs are designed for employees who do not have supervisor responsibilities. If you are a manager or supervisor at an alcohol establishment, you can learn more about training requirements on the DABS website.

On-premise servers, including bartenders, waiters and other employees who sell alcohol for on-site consumption must complete training within 30 days of being hired.

Employees who sell sealed beer for off-site consumption must complete off-premise E.A.S.Y. training before engaging in any activity related to alcohol sales.
